TRANSFER PATHWAYS GUIDE: ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

The Bachelor of Science in Education: Elementary Education prepares students for initial teacher certification at the elementary level (K-6). Graduates of the program will be learning leaders, student advocates, and reflective practitioners. Students planning to pursue the Elementary Education major at Drake can get a head start on major requirements by fulfilling some or all of the following courses at DMACC. Additional requirements and student teaching will be fulfilled at Drake.

Students must complete at least one teaching endorsement in addition to the requirements for the Elementary Education major in order to be licensed in the State of Iowa.

Students are not required to take any or all of these courses in order to transfer to Drake but may use this as a guide to take applicable coursework for these degree programs.

Using Drake's Transfer Pathways Guides

Many courses from DMACC transfer to Drake; check TES for additional transfer course details. The courses listed here are required in the following majors and can be completed either before or after transfer to Drake. Students are encouraged to work with their DMACC advisor to develop a plan that utilizes as many of these courses as possible to satisfy core and elective requirements for their degree program.

General Education Articulation Agreement

Drake honors Associate of Arts (AA degrees) and Associate of Sciences (AS degrees) from the state of Iowa community college system, including Des Moines Area Community College, to complete Drake's general education curriculum (known as the Areas of Inquiry). Students must complete 60 transferable credits with a minimum 2.0 GPA to qualify.

Reverse transfer to complete the AA or AS with one or two Drake courses is also possible. If you have questions, please discuss this possibility with a Drake Admission Counselor or a DMACC advisor.

Elementary Education Core Courses

For admission to the Teacher Education Program, students must successfully complete DMACC or Drake equivalents of EDUC 103, EDUC 108, EDUC 111 (available for cross-enrollment at Drake; no pre-requisites), and SPED 120. Students can take either EDU 213 or the combination of EDU 210 + 218 to fulfill the EDUC 103 requirement.

Either PSY 121 or 281 at DMACC can count for EDUC 108 at Drake. Students do not need to take both courses.

Children's Literature (LIT 105/EDUC 124) is a requirement for all Elementary Education students and can be taken at DMACC or after transferring to Drake.

Early Childhood Education Endorsement

The Early Childhood Education endorsement is an optional add-on to an Elementary Education major and cannot be pursued as a stand-alone major. Students pursuing the Early Childhood Education endorsement will take additional courses for the endorsement while at Drake. There are additional requirements for the Elementary Education major (see above for applicable DMACC courses). Other DMACC ECE courses may meet general elective credits for Drake but do not count toward the endorsement requirements.

Drake's Transfer Policies

Work with a Drake University Admission Counselor to find out exactly how your credits will transfer, keeping the following in mind:

Students can transfer a maximum of 66 credit hours from DMACC or other community colleges. A Drake bachelor's degree requires a minimum of 120 credits.

A grade of C- or higher is required for all transfer coursework.

A minimum of 40 upper level (100-199) credits is required for Drake bachelor's degrees.

The last 30 credit hours must be completed at Drake University.

Students may cross-enroll for a tuition-waived Drake course.

Admitted students with an A.A. or A.S. degree from an Iowa community college who have at least 60 semester credits acceptable for transfer and a minimum 2.00 cumulative grade point average will enter Drake University having fulfilled the Areas of Inquiry requirements.
