TRANSFER PATHWAYS GUIDE: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

The international business major in the Zimpleman College of Business prepares students for work in organizations whose owners, employees, customers and/or suppliers are not confined to the borders of one nation. Those who choose this major will learn about marketing goods and services around the world, global distribution networks, exchange rates and the different forms of ownership and financing that exist in non-U.S. countries. They will consider the dramatic impact of culture on the behavior of individuals in organizations and on the contracting and negotiating process of international trade. They will compare the business climate of developed and underdeveloped nations and learn how companies compete in a global business economy. International business students are exposed to ethical issues and the impact of business decisions on global ecology. The curriculum requires a strong foundation of language and culture, history, geography and political science along with the business core classes. International business students are required to include an international experience in their program.

Drake accepts the DMACC Business Transfer Major. Please use the following guide to identify appropriate course choices, such as for calculus and statistics, if you are pursuing this transfer major.

Students are not required to take any or all of these courses in order to transfer to Drake but may use this as a guide to take applicable coursework for this degree program.

Using Drake's Transfer Pathways Guides

Many courses from DMACC transfer to Drake; check TES for additional transfer course details. The courses listed here are required in the following majors and can be completed either before or after transfer to Drake. Students are encouraged to work with their DMACC advisor to develop a plan that utilizes as many of these courses as possible to satisfy core and elective requirements for their degree program.

General Education Articulation Agreement

Drake honors Associate of Arts (AA degrees) and Associate of Sciences (AS degrees) from the state of Iowa community college system, including Des Moines Area Community College, to complete Drake's general education curriculum (known as the Areas of Inquiry). Students must complete 60 transferable credits with a minimum 2.0 GPA to qualify.

Reverse transfer to complete the AA or AS with one or two Drake courses is also possible. If you have questions, please discuss this possibility with a Drake Admission Counselor or a DMACC advisor.

Business Core

Students study a common core of courses as well as a selected major in one or more areas of study. The following courses are required of all business majors at Drake and can be completed while at DMACC or after transfer to Drake.

Either ENG 106 or 108 will fulfill the business writing requirement; students do not need to take both.

Either CSC 116 or BCA 212 will fulfill the IS 044 requirement; students do not need to take both.

Business Core Math (excluding Actuarial Science, Data Analytics & Quantitative Economics)

Students must complete the equivalent of MATH 28 Business Calculus or higher, as well as STAT 071 (Statistics 1) and STAT 072 (Statistics 2). DMACC offers equivalents of Business Calculus, Calculus 1, and Statistics 1. Students may choose to fulfill some or all of these courses at Drake.

Either MAT 157 or MAT 162 will transfer as STAT 071 Statistics 1. Students do not need to take both courses.

Students considering Actuarial Science, Data Analytics or Quantitative Economics should view the transfer guides for these majors, which have more quantitatively intense sequences.

International Business

These courses are specific to International Business. There may be overlap with other business majors at Drake. Students only need to complete one Politics course (either POL 121 or 125 at DMACC).

Students must demonstrate proficiency in a language other than their native tongue. Proficiency can be demonstrated by college credit or equivalent, including certification exam credit, for a language through the intermediate level (second year, college level). See DMACC's foreign language course options and speak with a Drake or DMACC advisor with questions. Non-English native speakers demonstrate foreign language proficiency implicitly by taking their classes in English while at Drake.

Drake's Transfer Policies

Work with a Drake University Admission Counselor to find out exactly how your credits will transfer, keeping the following in mind:

Students can transfer a maximum of 66 credit hours from DMACC or other community colleges. A Drake bachelor's degree requires a minimum of 120 credits.

A grade of C- or higher is required for all transfer coursework.

A minimum of 40 upper level (100-199) credits is required for Drake bachelor's degrees.

The last 30 credit hours must be completed at Drake University.

Students may cross-enroll for a tuition-waived Drake course.

Admitted students with an A.A. or A.S. degree from an Iowa community college who have at least 60 semester credits acceptable for transfer and a minimum 2.00 cumulative grade point average will enter Drake University having fulfilled the Areas of Inquiry requirements.
