DRAKE UNIVERSITY

TRANSFER PATHWAYS GUIDE: SOCIAL SCIENCE MAJORS
Drake offers several BA (bachelor of arts) degrees in Social Sciences: American Politics; Anthropology & Sociology; Economics; International Relations; Law, Politics & Society; Politics; and Sociology. All of these programs are housed in the College of Arts & Sciences. There are many courses in common across these majors. View Drake's catalog for more details on each of these programs.

Drake accepts the DMACC Political Science Transfer Major. Please use the following guide to identify appropriate course choices if you are pursuing a transfer major. Students are not required to take any or all of these courses in order to transfer to Drake but may use this as a guide to take applicable coursework for these degree programs.

Using Drake's Transfer Pathways Guides
Many courses from DMACC transfer to Drake; check TES for additional transfer course details. The courses listed here are required in the following majors and can be completed either before or after transfer to Drake. Students are encouraged to work with their DMACC advisor to develop a plan that utilizes as many of these courses as possible to satisfy core and elective requirements for their degree program.

General Education Articulation Agreement
Drake honors Associate of Arts (AA degrees) and Associate of Sciences (AS degrees) from the state of Iowa community college system, including Des Moines Area Community College, to complete Drake's general education curriculum (known as the Areas of Inquiry). Students must complete 60 transferable credits with a minimum 2.0 GPA to qualify.

Reverse transfer to complete the AA or AS with one or two Drake courses is also possible. If you have questions, please discuss this possibility with a Drake Admission Counselor or a DMACC advisor.

American Politics
American Political System (POL 111/POLS 001) and Comparative Politics (POL 125/POLS 065) are required for the American Politics Major.

Media/Modern Politics (POL 163/POLS 116) can satisfy an elective requirement in the major. Other options are available at Drake.

Economics (BA)
Only one calculus course is required for the Economics BA; choose from MAT 164/MATH 28 or MAT 211/MATH 50.

Students interested in graduate study in economics or a closely-related field (finance, public policy, international relations) will need more math and statistics than the regular economics major provides and should consider the quantitative economics major. Drake also offers a BSBA in Economics through the College of Business and Public Administration, which requires the business core curriculum.

International Relations also requires students to complete two years of coursework or credits in a single language or demonstrate equivalent competence.

Law, Politics & Society is an interdisciplinary major. Transfer students may satisfy two lower-level electives in one related field (anthropology, economics, English, history, philosophy, politics, religion, rhetoric, or sociology) as part of the LPS major. Most courses from DMACC transfer as lower-level courses to Drake. The courses listed below are possible lower-level electives for the LPS major but are not a comprehensive list.
